Seven people have been killed in Esoit, Trans Mara West, Narok county, following clashes between the Maasai and Kipsigis communities.

Deputy county commissioner Mohammed Noor said the skirmishes began when a local businessman in the area, Ben Kolian, was shot dead on his way home.

A boy, Nicolas Ng’etich, from the Kipsigis community, was also wounded and later died during the incident at an M-Pesa shop. His body was found with deep cuts in the head.

The killings have led to a killing spree. Police collected five more bodies dumped in the bush in Esoit on Sunday.

“In retaliation, the Maasais accused their Kipsigis neighbours of being behind the killing and that is when they clashed and killed five [people], whose bodies were discovered in the forest this [Sunday] morning,” Noor said.

The county commissioner said police have been deployed to restore peace in the area. He urged the two communities to coexist and be peaceful.

Those killed in the forest were charcoal traders who were ambushed in the Pisagini area.

“Security has been intensified and we have patrols in the area by soldiers from Kilgoris and General Service Unit officers,” Noor told the Star.

The two communities have been wrangling over land for the last 10 years, with recurring violence arising from time to time.

Trans Mara East and West districts are located to the South West of Narok county.

Mr Ben Meronyi Kolian was reportedly being driven home when he was ambushed by unknown people and shot dead.

“The killers could have trailed him during the day and waylaid him as he headed home. They flushed him from the taxi and shot him,” Mr Noor told journalists.

He added that the businessman was shot at close range and that the assailants made away with an estimated Sh 200,000.

Police officers later took the body to St Joseph’s Hospital Mortuary.

The two districts were carved from former Trans Mara district that was under Kilgoris constituency. Kilgoris was later divided into Emurua Dikirr and Kilgoris constituencies.

Trans Mara East hosts Emurua Dikirr constituency while Trans Mara West hosts Kilgoris constituency.

Emurua Dikirr is dominated by the Kipsigis, while Kilgoris is dominated by the Maasai.

In 2016, more than 10 people were killed between June and November and hundreds of families displaced in skirmishes, leading to an agreement between the two communities to resolve conflicts between the border of Trans Mara East and West subcounties.

Efforts by the National Land Commission to resolve the land dispute in the region have been unsuccessful.
